Porto Metro does not run 24 hours. First trains are generally around 06:00 and the last scheduled services leave different terminal stations after midnight, but there is no single opening or closing time that works for every line, stop and direction. The train you need may finish before another line's last departure.
For the airport route, Metro do Porto's timetable valid from 7 September 2026 shows the first weekday Line E train from Trindade towards Aeroporto at 05:58 and the last at 00:37. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays the first Trindade departure is later, at 06:22. From Aeroporto towards Trindade, the first departure varies by day, while the last is 00:42. Those after-midnight times belong to the service that began the previous evening, not to a train available all night.
These are scheduled examples checked on 21 October 2026. The operator's current line-status panel describes Line E as Trindade–Aeroporto, while the downloadable timetable also prints some through services beyond Trindade. Use the timetable for your exact boarding station and date, then check live line status before travel. Do not rely on a direct airport train east of Trindade without confirmation.
What time is the first and last Porto Airport metro?
The September 2026 Line E timetable gives the following departures at the two most useful stations for airport travellers. Read the direction and day as carefully as the time: the last train leaving the airport is a different journey from the last train going to the airport. The operator notes a tolerance of about two minutes in its printed schedule, so reach the platform before the displayed departure. See Open Metro do Porto's complete September 2026 timetable (PDF) and the operator's latest maps and timetables.
| Boarding point and direction | First scheduled departure by day | Last scheduled departure |
|---|---|---|
| Trindade → Aeroporto | 05:58 weekdays; 06:22 Saturday, Sunday and holidays | 00:37 (after midnight, all listed days) |
| Aeroporto → Trindade | 06:06 weekdays; 05:58 Saturday; 05:57 Sunday and holidays | 00:42 (after midnight, all listed days) |
Is there one opening time for the whole Porto Metro?
No. The official frequency sheet lists a first and last departure at each line's outer ends, and the full timetable then shows when those trains reach individual stations. For example, the current published first train from Póvoa de Varzim on Line B is 05:44, while the first Line D departure from Hospital São João is 06:00. Their last terminal departures also differ. A general description such as '06:00 to 01:00' is useful only as a rough description of the operating day.
A train can reach an intermediate stop after its terminal departure, and its final arrival can be later still. On weekdays, the first airport-bound service leaves Trindade at 05:58 and is scheduled to arrive at Aeroporto at 06:29; on weekends and holidays, the first Trindade departure is 06:22. The last airport-bound service leaves Trindade at 00:37 and is scheduled to reach Aeroporto at 01:04. Do not read an arrival time as another chance to board at the origin.
Short-turn services may stop before the end of a coloured line, especially later in the day. Check the train's displayed destination as well as its letter. A line being in service does not prove that the next train continues to your particular outer station. See the official 2026 line-frequency and first/last departure sheet (PDF).
How do you find the last metro for your exact journey?
Start with the correct day column: weekday, Saturday, or Sunday and public holiday. In the timetable, find your boarding station on the line travelling towards the destination you need. The final row with a time in that station's column is its scheduled last train in that direction; a dash means that particular service does not stop there or does not start there.
Next check every interchange. If your route changes from Line D at Trindade to airport Line E, you need a Line D train that reaches Trindade in time for an airport-bound departure. It is not enough to see that a Line D train leaves São Bento before 01:00. Late transfers need time to change platforms and validate again, and delays can remove a tight connection.
Finally compare the downloadable schedule with the operator's current line-status page and the departure boards at the station. The timetable states a normal pattern; temporary closures, works or special-event services can change it. Save the relevant PDF page on your phone, but treat the live operator notice as the final check for travel tonight. See the Porto Metro map to find your line and interchange and Metro do Porto's current line status.
- Choose your travel day, starting station, destination and the direction shown on the train.
- Read the last timed row for every line you need, including the arrival time at a transfer station.
- Check Metro do Porto's live line status and station display before relying on that connection.
Can you take the metro after a late flight arrives?
Maybe, but compare the time you can reach Aeroporto station with the last scheduled departure, not with the flight's landing time. The September 2026 timetable shows a 00:42 Line E departure from Aeroporto towards Trindade. Deplaning, border checks when required, checked baggage and the walk to the platform all take time. A flight landing at 00:30 is therefore not a safe promise of a metro connection.
If you miss that train, do not wait for another regular Line E service in the middle of the night. STCP's 3M night bus links Aeroporto with Avenida dos Aliados roughly hourly during its overnight service window; check the departure at your stop for the travel date. A taxi, app-booked car or arranged transfer is more direct when the next bus is a long wait or your hotel is far from Aliados. Keep your address and pickup instructions available offline.
Trindade is the main direct Line E arrival for the centre. Reaching São Bento, Bolhão or Gaia may require an onward connection or a walk. Near the last airport departure, that second train may already have stopped running; check both legs before buying a ticket on the assumption of a full metro journey. See Porto Airport to city-centre transport, STCP's 3M airport night bus and an overnight wait at Porto Airport.

Is the first metro early enough for your flight?
On weekdays, the first scheduled Line E departure from Trindade towards Aeroporto is 05:58, reaching the airport station at 06:29 in the September 2026 timetable. On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays the first Trindade departure is 06:22. You still need to walk to the terminal, check in or drop luggage if necessary, clear security and reach the gate. That makes the metro unsuitable for a flight whose required airport arrival is earlier than the train can deliver you.
Work backwards from your airline's check-in, bag-drop and boarding deadlines, not just its departure time. For a very early flight, book a taxi or ride-hailing journey, arrange a transfer, or stay near the airport. The right choice depends on how many people and bags are travelling, whether you have checked baggage and how much time your airline requires. See Calculate how early to arrive at Porto Airport.
Are metro hours different on Sundays or public holidays?
The full operator timetable has separate pages for weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays and public holidays. In the Line E pages valid from 7 September 2026, the last departures at Aeroporto and Trindade match across those day types, but the first trains and daytime frequencies differ. A traveller leaving Trindade for the airport on Sunday cannot use the weekday 05:58 first-train time; the Sunday departure is 06:22.
Other lines can have their own service pattern, and temporary notices can override the usual timetable. Late-night festival or event services should only be used when Metro do Porto announces them for the particular date. Do not assume regular all-night trains because it is a weekend or a holiday.
Do tickets or validation change for the last metro?
No special late-night metro ticket is listed in the ordinary Andante rules. You still need a ticket for the route's zones and must validate before boarding and again when changing line. A usual airport-to-central-Porto example needs Z4, but use Andante's zone information for your exact journey rather than choosing by train colour or number of stops.
A Blue Andante card is reusable and the standard choice for the integrated network. Bank-card tap-to-travel is a limited pilot at listed Metro boarding stations, not a guarantee at every late-night stop. If you are relying on a contactless bank card, check the official eligible-station list while you still have another way to buy a ticket. See Andante cards, zones and validation and how to pay for Porto Metro and buses.
What should you check before a late or early journey?
For a planned journey, keep three facts together: the station and direction, the relevant timed departure, and any connection that must still be running. Check these on Metro do Porto's current downloads page and line-status page shortly before travel. If you are going to the airport, add the time needed after the metro reaches Aeroporto station to reach your airline's desk or gate.
For an arrival close to 00:42 or a departure before the first metro can get you to OPO, arrange a road option in advance. That is a more reliable plan than building an itinerary around a final train with no time for a delay, baggage or a missed transfer.

FAQ - Porto metro opening hours
No. Scheduled first and last departures depend on the line, station, direction and day. Use Metro do Porto's current timetable for your exact route rather than a single network-wide closing time.
