Porto rises in layers from the Douro, and the river still explains much of the city’s character. Ribeira’s lanes descend towards quays once busy with trade, while Vila Nova de Gaia faces the historic centre from the opposite bank, its slopes lined with port wine lodges. Bridges connect the two cities and create some of Porto’s most useful viewpoints. West of the centre, the Douro reaches the Atlantic at Foz, shifting the mood from dense stone streets to open water. That geography makes Porto rewarding but steep: a short distance on a map can contain stairs, sharp gradients and wide views. Plan by elevation as well as neighbourhood, and leave time to stop rather than treating every route as a shortcut.

Many central streets are steep and paved with traditional stone. Check walking routes and footwear, particularly when choosing accommodation.
Gaia is across the river
Many of the famous port wine cellars are located in Vila Nova de Gaia rather than Porto itself.
