Porto is not as cheap as it was a decade ago.
Neither is Lisbon. Neither is most of Europe. We can all be nostalgic together later.
The good news is that you can still stay centrally without paying luxury hotel prices.
My priority for a budget Porto hotel is location.
Saving 25€ on a room becomes less exciting if you then spend the difference on taxis because your hotel is somewhere near Spain.
These are five options I would check first.
Hotel prices move constantly, so I am deliberately not giving fixed nightly rates. Search your actual dates and compare them.
1. Moov Hotel Porto Centro
Best for: simple and central
Moov Hotel Porto Centro sits at Praça da Batalha, close to São Bento and Rua de Santa Catarina.
That is a very strong location for a budget focused hotel.
The rooms are simple and the whole concept is built around giving you the basics without pretending you need seven decorative cushions and a handwritten welcome poem.
For a Porto trip where you plan to spend most of the day outside, that makes sense.
You can walk to São Bento, Bolhão, Ribeira and Clérigos.
I would choose it for: couples and solo travellers who care more about location than hotel facilities.
2. Hotel Spot Family Suites
Best for: families and small groups
Hotel Spot Family Suites is on Rua do Bolhão, close to Mercado do Bolhão and Trindade.
As the name suggests, it works particularly well for families and travellers who need more space than a standard small hotel room.
The location is one of its strongest advantages.
You are close to the metro and can walk into the main historic centre.
That makes life much easier if you are travelling with children.
Dragging tired kids uphill across Porto is one of those experiences that builds family memories. Not necessarily the memories you were hoping for.
I would choose it for: families and small groups.
3. ibis Porto Centro Mercado Bolhão
Best for: a predictable central hotel
ibis Porto Centro Mercado Bolhão sits close to the market, Rua de Santa Catarina and Trindade metro station.
The appeal is straightforward: a recognised budget format in a location that works well for sightseeing and airport transport.
Rooms and facilities are functional rather than luxurious, which is exactly the point of this shortlist.
I would choose it for: travellers who value a central address and a familiar hotel format.
4. ZERO Box Lodge Porto
Best for: something different
ZERO Box Lodge is near Bolhão and Avenida dos Aliados.
Instead of conventional hotel rooms, accommodation is built around compact wooden boxes.
There are no traditional windows in the rooms.
That will either sound clever or slightly alarming.
I actually think the concept makes sense for short city breaks where you mostly need somewhere central to sleep.
The location is excellent and the property has much more personality than a generic budget chain.
If natural light in the morning is important to you, however, read the room concept carefully before booking.
I would choose it for: couples and solo travellers who like unusual hotels.
5. Ibis Budget Porto Gaia
Best for: travellers with a car
Ibis Budget Porto Gaia sits across the Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia.
It is farther from the historic centre than the other options on this list, which is precisely why I would not recommend it to everyone.
Where it starts making sense is if you have a car or find a significantly lower rate than central Porto.
You get the predictability of a budget chain and avoid paying a premium simply for being beside Clérigos.
Just remember to account for transport.
A cheap hotel stops being cheap surprisingly quickly when every journey becomes a taxi ride.
I would choose it for: road trips and travellers prioritising price over centrality.
How to find cheaper hotels in Porto
Location and dates make a huge difference.
Friday and Saturday nights can cost noticeably more than weekdays.
Summer, Easter, São João and major events can also push prices higher.
If possible, search a few different date combinations before deciding.
I would also look just outside the most obvious Ribeira streets.
Bolhão, Trindade, Bonfim and parts of Cedofeita can give you better value while remaining walkable.
Hotel or hostel?
For two people, a simple hotel room can sometimes make more financial sense than paying for two hostel beds.
For solo travellers, hostels usually win.
Always compare the total price, not just the headline rate.
Breakfast, taxes and cancellation conditions can change the real cost.
Where should budget travellers stay?
I would prioritise the area around Bolhão, Trindade and Batalha.
You remain central but avoid some of the riverfront premium.
Bonfim can also offer good value, particularly for longer stays.
I would only move much farther out if the saving is significant.
Your time in Porto has a value too.
