Porto Tourist Tax 2026: Rate, Exemptions and Payment

Porto's 2026 tourist tax is €3 per person per night, capped at seven nights. Check who pays, exemptions, hotel collection and example totals.

Porto's tourist tax is €3 per person for each night in paid tourist accommodation within the municipality. It applies from age 13 and stops after seven consecutive nights per person, per stay. For two adults sharing a room for three nights, the tax is €18 in total, not €3 per room or a one-off booking fee.

Your hotel, hostel or registered local accommodation collects it. The charge may already appear in the booking total or may be requested separately at the property, so check the price breakdown before paying twice. Some guests are exempt, but the accommodation needs the supporting evidence required for the exemption.

The rules below are those published by Porto City Council and its current municipal regulation, checked in October 2026. They concern accommodation inside Porto's municipal boundary; an address in Vila Nova de Gaia or another nearby municipality needs a separate local-tax check.

How much is the Porto tourist tax for your stay?

Multiply €3 by the number of guests aged 13 or over, then by the number of chargeable nights. The cap is seven consecutive nights for each person in the stay. It is not a cap of €21 per room: two paying guests can owe up to €42 for a stay of seven nights or longer.

A room price displayed as a single nightly figure may not show this per-person charge clearly. Work out the tax from the actual guest ages and stay length, then compare the booking summary with the amount the property requests. The examples below assume no exemption and accommodation inside the municipality of Porto. See central Porto hotel prices and booking terms.

Who pays the tourist tax in Porto?

The charge applies to paying guests aged 13 or over at tourist accommodation or local lodging inside Porto municipality. The regulation expressly says a guest's place of residence does not change the rule. A Portuguese resident on a paid hotel stay is therefore not automatically exempt simply because they live in Portugal.

Hotels, hostels, guesthouses and registered short-stay apartments can fall under the rule when they are within Porto. The regulation also includes paid day-use or by-the-hour accommodation lasting more than three hours. A day trip without paid accommodation does not create an overnight tourist-tax charge.

Age is assessed from the 13th birthday, including that day. If a child turns 13 during a stay, ask the property to calculate the relevant nights using the date of birth shown on the identification document. A family should enter the children's actual ages in a booking rather than assume the room rate determines the tax. See Porto's official tourist-tax regulation.

Who is exempt from Porto's tourist tax?

Children aged 12 and under are exempt. Porto also lists specific exemptions for medically motivated stays, disability and certain social or religious circumstances. They are conditional: tell the accommodation before payment and bring the document that proves the reason, rather than expecting the booking platform to apply the reduction automatically.

A stay motivated by a medical act can exempt the patient and up to two companions, with proof of the appointment or treatment. A guest with disability or incapacity of at least 60%, plus up to two companions, can also qualify with supporting documentation. These are the municipal categories; the property should apply them to the actual booking rather than guessing from a traveller's description.

Other listed situations include documented eviction or similar displacement; temporary placement by public social bodies; and people seeking asylum after displacement by conflict. A documented religious pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela or Fátima is exempt for the first night in a Porto pilgrim hostel. That one-night rule does not mean that any ordinary hostel stay is tax-free. See the municipality's full list of exemptions.

  • ✓ Under 13: age shown by identification when requested
  • ✓ Medical stay or qualifying disability: give the property the relevant supporting document
  • ✓ Pilgrimage: qualifying credential and first night in a Porto pilgrim hostel
  • ✓ Other social exemptions: ask the property what official proof is required

When and how do you pay the Porto city tax?

The accommodation collects the tax. Porto's regulation allows the provider to request the payment at the beginning, during or at the end of the stay. There is no single citywide rule saying it must be paid only at check-in or only at checkout. Confirm the property's method, especially for an apartment with self check-in.

Look for a separate city-tax line in the booking price and in the accommodation's invoice or receipt. The municipal regulation requires the tax to be shown separately, either on the accommodation invoice or on its own invoice. If the booking platform says the tax was already collected, show that breakdown to the property before paying again. If the platform says it is excluded, budget for collection by the host.

For a payment request that arrives through a message or unfamiliar link, verify the amount against €3 times the eligible guests and nights, then confirm the payment method through the property's contact details in your booking. Keep the receipt and reservation summary together until after your stay. The municipality's tax portal is mainly for accommodation operators to register and remit what they collect; guests normally settle with their accommodation. See the municipal rule for collection and receipts.

Does the Porto tax apply in Vila Nova de Gaia or near the airport?

Porto's €3 rate belongs to the municipality of Porto. A hotel across the Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia is in a different municipality even when its description says 'Porto' and the centre is a short walk away. The same applies to properties in Matosinhos or other towns around the airport: check that municipality's current tax in the booking terms instead of transferring Porto's rule to it.

This boundary matters when comparing a central Porto hotel with a Gaia wine-cellar hotel or an airport-area property. Compare the complete accommodation price, transport and the applicable local tax for the exact address. A lower nightly rate can lose its advantage after travel costs, while a different tax on its own is rarely a reason to choose the wrong base. See hotels in Vila Nova de Gaia and the right Porto neighbourhood for your stay.

What should you check before booking and at check-in?

Before booking, enter every guest and their correct age, locate the property on a map and read whether taxes are included in the final price. Take a screenshot or save the confirmation showing the total and any amount due at the property. For a long stay, check that the seven-night cap has been applied per eligible person rather than per room.

At check-in, ask for the tax calculation if the amount differs from the confirmation. Show the booking breakdown if you believe it was prepaid, or the required exemption evidence if one applies. A clear invoice should identify the tax separately. For an unresolved mismatch, ask the property to explain it in writing and use the booking platform's support channel with the reservation and receipt.

If you have two separate reservations or change hotels during a longer trip, do not assume the seven-night cap carries across every property. The regulation frames it per person and per stay. Ask each accommodation how it treats your actual dates before using one property's calculation for another booking. See the best area to stay in Porto before comparing prices.

The practical rule for your Porto booking

For a standard paid stay inside Porto municipality, budget €3 for each guest aged 13 or over for each of the first seven consecutive nights. Check whether the amount is already in the reservation total, keep proof for any exemption and pay the accommodation according to its stated process.

For a Gaia or airport-area address, identify the municipality first. The property's final price breakdown is the right place to check the tax that applies to that location and booking.
