Do not confuse Porto with Porto Santo
Porto Santo Airport uses the code PXO and serves the island of Porto Santo in Madeira. It is not an alternative airport for visiting the city of Porto on the mainland.
When comparing a low fare or a multi-airport search result, verify the three-letter code before paying. OPO is the correct code for Porto city; PXO is a different destination requiring an island flight.
Where is Porto Airport?
OPO is north of central Porto, near Maia and Matosinhos. It is outside the historic centre but connected to the city by Metro Line E, road transport and taxis.
The onward journey to central stations is normally short enough that most visitors should choose OPO even when another flight into Portugal has a slightly lower fare. Compare the complete journey, including an additional train, bus or overnight stay, rather than only the airfare.
Should you ever fly to Lisbon instead?
Lisbon Airport can make sense when the fare, schedule or long-haul connection is substantially better and Porto is one stop in a wider Portugal itinerary. It is not a nearby airport: reaching Porto still requires a separate intercity journey.
Choose Lisbon first when the trip genuinely begins there or when the combined flight and train plan is better for your dates. For a short Porto city break, flying directly to OPO usually protects more of the trip from transfers and delays.
Is Vigo an alternative airport for Porto?
Vigo Airport in Spain can occasionally appear in broad searches for north-west Iberia, but it is not Porto's local airport. A cross-border journey and a workable connection are still required.
Treat Vigo as a specialist option for a regional road trip, not as the default way to reach Porto. The same rule applies to any distant airport: price the complete route to your accommodation before deciding.

After choosing OPO, plan the airport-to-city journey around your arrival time, luggage and exact accommodation. Metro Line E works well for many daytime arrivals, while a taxi or arranged transfer can be easier late at night or when the final street is steep.
